This day in history from:

If it were up to me... (the series)

I think I'll start a new series of posts with that title above.

It'll just be a forum for my aspirations, my most sincere wishes (even mundane ones).

So here goes...

If it were up to me, I'll be in the United States pursuing either further studies in law (a master's degree, probably) or studying for the New York bar.

That was my career plan about ten years ago. And I already had a funding deal with my parents for the graduate studies.

But marriage (that failed anyway) and children changed all that and I was swept into the rat race.

It's not that I regret it, you know, because my kids will always be a blessing to me. But sometimes, I just stop and imagine what could have been if it were up to me...

Anyway... I have a long day ahead. Time to freshen up and prepare...

"Largo" from Xerxes by Handel

Finally, after more than a year of chamber sessions, we had Largo done. Well, at least half done...

It was a relatively easy piece to play, but playing in a group is a different thing altogether.

Hopefully, we get to finish this next week...

If you want an idea on what we are trying to achieve, listen to this clip (at around 53 seconds into it, that's what we are attempting to play, of course, minus the vocals)...

Blog Lecture No. 73: Fair Elections Act

Let's get straight to this point, shall we?

What does the constitution mandate about elections?

Section 2, Article V of the 1987 Constitution states:

The Congress shall provide a system for securing the secrecy and sanctity of the ballot as well as a system for absentee voting by qualified Filipinos abroad.

So what did Congress do as regards this mandate?

Of course, they did the Omnibus Elections Code, as amended, but this law was originally enacted under the 1973 Constitution.

Insofar as the 1987 Constitution (aside from the laws amending the OEC) is concerned, they came up with Republic Act No. 9006, otherwise known as the so-called "Fair Elections Act."

What is the aim of this law?

According to its Section 2, "to guarantee or ensure equal opportunity for public service, including access to media time and space, and the equitable right to reply, for public information campaigns and fora among candidates and assure free, orderly, honest, peaceful and credible elections."

Yeah, right.

And how shall this be attained through said law?

The State (through the COMELEC, cough! cough!) shall, during the election period, supervise or regulate the enjoyment or utilization of all franchises or permits for the operation of media of communication or information.

What are the salient features of this law?

1. Equal media access to political parties, party list groups and other bona fide candidates
2. Comelec Space and Time
3. Candidate's Right to Reply
4. Common Poster Areas
5. Discounted rates during election period

What is the election period, by the way?

Election period refers to a period starting from 90 days before the date of the election to 30 days after that election day.

Distinguish that from campaign period which is:

(a) For President, Vice-President and Senators, ninety (90) days before the day of the election; and

(b) For Members of the House of Representatives and elective provincial, city and municipal officials, forty-five (45) days before the day of the election.
However, in the preparation of the election calendar, the COMELEC may exclude the day before the day of the election itself, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. (Section 5, RA 7166)

How does RA 9006 ensure equal access to media?

This law:

1. Limits print advertisements to one-fourth (1/4) page in broadsheet and one-half (1/2) page in tabloids thrice a week per newspaper, magazine or other publications, during the campaign period.

2. Limits each bona fide candidate or registered political party for a nationally elective office to not more than one hundred twenty (120) minutes of television advertisement and one hundred eighty (180) minutes of radio advertisement whether by purchase or donation.

3. Limits each bona fide candidate or registered political party for a locally elective office to not more than sixty (60) minutes of television advertisement and ninety (90) minutes of radio advertisement whether by purchase or donation.

4. Mandates all members of media, television, radio or print, not to scrupulously report and interpret the news, and to take care not to suppress essential facts nor to distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis.

5. Considers any mass media columnist, commentator, announcer, reporter, on-air correspondent or personality who is a candidate for any elective public office or is a campaign volunteer for or employed or retained in any capacity by any candidate or political party as resigned, if so required by their employer, or on a leave of absence from his/her work as such during the campaign period

6. Further mandates any media practitioner who is an official of a political party or a member of the campaign staff of a candidate or political party not to use his/her time or space to favor any candidate or political party.

7. Prohibits any movie, cinematograph or documentary portraying the life or biography of a candidate to be publicly exhibited in a theater, television station or any public forum during the campaign period.

8. Prohibits any movie, cinematograph or documentary portrayed by an actor or media personality who is himself a candidate to be publicly exhibited in a theater or any public forum during the campaign period.

What is COMELEC space and time?

It refers to COMELEC-procured print space and media time for two purposes:

1. For the announcement of the lits of candidates;
2. For equal allocation to candidates for campaign purposes;
3. For public information dissemination on election-related concerns.

What is the law now as regards posting of campaign materials?

The COMELEC may authorize political parties and party-list groups to erect common poster areas for their candidates in not more than ten (10) public places such as plazas, markets, barangay centers and the like, wherein candidates can post, display or exhibit election propaganda: Provided, That the size of the poster areas shall not exceed twelve (12) by sixteen (16) feet or its equivalent.

Independent candidates with no political parties may likewise be authorized to erect common poster areas in not more than ten (10) public places, the size of which shall not exceed four (4) by six (6) feet or its equivalent.

Candidates may post any lawful propaganda material in private places with the consent of the owner thereof, and in public places or property which shall be allocated equitably and impartially among the candidates.

What is this right to reply?

According to Section 10 of the law, all registered parties and bona fide candidates shall have the right to reply to charges published against them.

Such reply shall be given publicity by the newspaper, television and/or radio station which first printed or aired the charges with the same prominence or in the same page or section or in the same time slot as the first statement.

What are the media discount rates during election period?

It is 30% for TV, 20% for radio and 10% for print.

Any further questions should be directed to the COMELEC... but they're busy right now...

This day in history from:

So the cat is out of the bag

Do you remember Raul Lambino, who ran the supposedly "grass roots" and "privately initiated" Charter Change efforts? (I'm sorry, suddenly the Sigaw ng Bayan website is already down... but if this is denied, this and this can serve as proof).

Now this same guy is out as a lawyer of LAKAS-CMD, as I read just now that he is chief legal of that party speaking in its behalf on another "insurance cards" issue (sorry, that article is not available on-line but pick up a Philippine Star today, you'll see). And I think this is not being emphasized now...

The Charter Change issue is dead anyway, eh?

23rd and 24th

I deliberately made this entry late lest I be accused of being bitter (again...)

So I'll just make it as plain as I can.

The 23rd visit (for March) was a no-show. The 24th, same thing.

So there.

This day in history from:

Beating the Heat

Whew! That's hot! (and not in a Paris Hilton sort of way...)

I never really complained before about how hot it can be here during the summer season. I even used blankets when I nap in the middle of a hot summer day.

But the temperature this year has really become unbearable. I progressively found it hard to sleep soundly these days. And this is bearing down on my productivity.

So with some earnings I got yesterday, I managed to acquire an "air cooler" for my bedroom. This is different from an air conditioner because this air cooler evaporates water running from filter to cool the air coming out of it. It does not use refrigerants.

Of course you don't get the same results as an air conditioner but I'm not that hard to please. Electric fans cannot cut it because I just blows hot air in your face and the one I used was already very noisy. And while the cost of an air conditioner has come down, the cost electricity to power it hasn't. This solution is a healthy compromise and I slept soundly for the first time in a long time.

Anyway, I hope the good night's sleep I got will give me a boost. I have a lot of things to do. And the kids want to swim in the community pool tonight to beat the heat...

Here's to a great day!

Calibration

Never hurts to experiment...

Just ran Mac OS X's calibration utility for the TV Blogging set-up I told you about sometime ago.

Really did wonders to improve the picture clarity and the readability of the text. With these adjustments, I hope I don't get eyestrain anymore.

Now, I'm just surfing the web and watching Conan 'O Brien at the same time while waiting for a couple of meetings a little later.

Just add some chips, a few drinks or perhaps a pizza and I can't complain anymore...

Now that's the life!

This day in history from:

Father-Daughter Bonding

It's been a while since Bea and I went out together alone...

During the tumultuous final years of my marriage, Bea and I found ourselves hanging out together, going to the mall and other places, just the two of us since her mother did not want to go out with us. She would rather go out with her friends everyday for most of the day. Needing someone to be with, she even stuck with me on my choir practice (that ran well into Saturday night), and the Sunday morning masses.

Since we moved out, though, with Bea having her grandmother (my mother) to be with and with Nico needing equal attention, we did not have that much time together anymore.

But for some reason, my daughter wanted to come with me when I reported to my government consultancy today. It's probably because that office is located in front of a major mall in Quezon City.

I usually park in that mall anyway but I told her she had to endure a long walk with a trip across the EDSA overpass with me. But she was adamant.

She endured the long walk and the half-day wait in that office as I attended to some pending matters.

But she got it all back afterwards. She ate a lot at Terriyaki Boy and got some magazines and candies. In the interest of fairness, I bought Nico a DVD of Cars.

And of course she had a good time. She got the usual "She's pretty," remarks at the office, and I always thanked those who made it (because she got that from my gene pool, heheheheheheh!) and they told me to consider getting her into TV commercials, etc.

I refused because I know if she becomes famous, someone will attempt to come back into her life because there'll be something in it for her already...

And I realize I miss those days when it was only Bea and I together...

Enough of this, time to go back to work on some paperwork...

Limbo dead

Now, "limbo" will only refer to a dance and not a place (or a state of being).

The Catholic Church has officially abandoned its teaching about limbo as a place where unbaptized babies go when they die, as Pope Benedict XVI already stated before he was elected that this concept was merely a "theological hypothesis."

Just as well... I personally think it's an unfair concept, perhaps a marketing ploy then by the early church.

I am still looking for the full text but you can read the Reuters news item here.

Routine Break

For some reason, I found myself breaking from my usual weekend routine.

For one, I did yesterday what I have never done before, leave home to meet some friends and arrive back home with the sun already shining. Since we had a such a good time, I chose to chill out over some friend's house and leave at morning than risking an accident by attempting to drive drowsy.

But that took a toll on me, as I am not getting any younger. I slept until 4:00 p.m., so I missed my chamber sessions. And a farewell party for my cousin and his family took me out of choir duties. Then, I went out again with friends. That's where I came from before this entry.

But this memorable weekend only goes to show my body can't take this nightlife lifestyle anymore, because that's simply not me.

So anyway, I'll unwind a little and then rest already. I can still play for the 4:30 p.m. mass today.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. And I think the week ahead will be a busy one.

A Time to Reflect

"Do you know what it feels to be spit on your face and to have trash shoved down your throat? Do you know what it feels like to dig your own grave?
Do you know what it feels like to have throat slashed from ear to ear? Do you know what it feels like to be torched alive?
Do you know what it feels like to be humiliated and be impaled upon on a cross? And left to bleed to death for your amusement? You have never felt a single ounce of pain your whole life. Did you want to inject as much misery in our lives as you can just because you can?"

"You had everything you wanted. Your Mercedes wasn’t enough, you brats. Your golden necklaces weren’t enough, you snobs. Your trust fund wasn’t enough. Your vodka and Cognac weren’t enough. All your debaucheries weren’t enough. Those weren’t enough to fulfill your hedonistic needs. You had everything."

-Cho Seung-Hui

Rather than immediately dismissing these words as those of a madman, I think the United States should take the time to reflect on these words as they cast some truth about the decadence in first world countries at the expense of the poor ones... Maybe, it's time to reflect on why these things-- massacres, calamities, terrorist attacks, etc. are happening to them. Maybe it's just nature correcting itself in the midst of the decadence and moral decline that is happening there. And I don't need to demonstrate this decadence and decline, you know.

I could always say "You had this one coming..." or "This is all your undoing," but I won't. At least not yet...

Just my 5 pesos (approximately two cents, because even that exchange rate is a first world contrivance that is killing us) worth...

What Marriage?

Got this from my inbox:

1. Marriage is not a word. It's a sentence (a life sentence).

2. Marriage is love. Love is blind. Therefore marriage is an institution for the blind.

3. Marriage is an institution in which a man loses his Bachelor's Degree and the woman gets her masters.

4. Marriage is a three ring circus: engagement ring, wedding ring and suffering.

5. Married life is full of excitement and frustration:
In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens.
In the second year, the woman speaks and the man listens.
In the third year, they both speak and the NEIGHBORS listen.

6. Getting married is very much like going to the restaurant with friends. You order what you want, and when you see what the other fellow has, you wish you had ordered that instead.

7. There was this man who muttered a few words in the church and found himself married. A year later he muttered something in his sleep and found himself divorced.

8. A happy marriage is a matter of giving and taking; the husband gives and the wife takes.

9. Son: How much does it cost to get married, Dad?
Father: I don't know son, I'm still paying for it.

10. Son: Is it true? Dad, I heard that in ancient China, a man doesn't know his wife until he marries her.
Father: That happens everywhere, son, EVERYWHERE!

11. Love is one long sweet dream, and marriage is the alarm clock.

12. They say that when a man holds a woman's hand before marriage, it is love; after marriage it is self-defense.

13. When a newly married man looks happy, we know why. But when a 10-year married man looks happy, we wonder why.

14. There was this lover who said that he would go through hell for her. They got married, and now he is going through HELL.

15. Confucius says: man who sinks into woman's arm soon have arms in woman's sink.

16. When a man steals your wife, there is no better revenge than to let him keep her.

17. Eighty percent of married man cheat in America, the rest cheat in Europe.

18. After marriage, husband and wife become two sides of a coin. They just can't face each other, but still they stay together.

19. Marriage is man and a woman become one. The trouble starts when they try to decide which one.

20. Before marriage, a man yearns for the woman he loves. After the marriage the "Y" becomes silent.

21. I married Miss right, I just didn't know her first name was Always.

22. It's not true that married men live longer than single men, it only seems longer.

23. Losing a wife can be hard. In my case, it was almost impossible.

24. A man was complaining to a friend: I HAD IT ALL, MONEY, A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE, THE LOVE OF A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN, AND THEN I LOST IT ALL. WHAT HAPPENED? asked his friend. MY WIFE FOUND OUT

25. WIFE: Let's go out and have some fun tonight.
HUSBAND: OK, but if you get home before I do, leave the hallway light on.

26. At a cocktail party, one woman said to another: AREN'T YOU WEARING YOUR RING ON THE WRONG FINGER? The other replied, YES, I AM, I MARRIED THE WRONG MAN.

27. Man is incomplete until he gets married, then he is finished.

28. It doesn't matter how often a married man changes his job, he still ends up with the same boss.

29. A man inserted an ad in the paper - WIFE WANTED. The next day he received a hundred letters and they all said the same thing - YOU CAN HAVE MINE.

30. When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you can be sure of one thing - either the car is new or the wife is.

Microblogging on Twitter

I'm trying out Twitter these past few days. But seriously, if I update it a lot, there's something wrong and I should be getting a life...

Most of my day was explained in my entries there... go ahead, check them out...

If you don't want to get it there, I'll tell you now.

It was supposed to be very long day. But since my other meeting was canceled, I went home early to spend time with my kids. We had fun, really.

Oh, and I can finally play "Arms of Love" on the keyboards because I already have the chords...

And then a visit and comment in my recent entry really made my day.

So now it's time to cool off since the days (and nights) are progressively getting hotter... Whew!

Arms of Love

by Amy Grant
(this is the only video I found with this song in it...)

Lord I'm really glad you're here.
I hope you feel the same when you see all my fear,
And how I fail,
I fall sometimes.
It's hard to walk on shifting sand.
I miss the rock, and find theres nowhere left to stand;
I start to cry.
Lord, please help me raise my hands so you can pick me up.
Hold me close,
Hold me tighter.

I have found a place where I can hide.
It's safe inside
Your arms of love.
Like a child who's helped throughout a storm,
You keep me warm
In your arms of love.

Storms will come and storms will go.
Wonder just how many storms it takes until
I finally know
You're here always.
Even when my skies are far from gray,
I can stay;
Teach me to stay there,

In the place I've found where I can hide.
It's safe inside
Your arms of love.
Like a child who's helped throughout a storm,
You keep me warm
In your arms of love.

Random Thoughts on the Virginia Tech Massacre

1. Of course, I'm saddened as I never condone such senseless violence... the deadliest shooting rampage in American history at 32...

2. The gunman was a certain 23 year old Korean named Cho Seung-Hui, an undergrad studying English and living in Virginia Tech campus... I hope this does not trigger another panic-hysteria in the States against Asians, Muslims, Latinos, and [place your ethnic groups of choice here]... or here against Koreans, because there are a lot of Koreans here in the Philippines...

3. These things that are happening in the States should wake them up from rosy outlook. There's something wrong there... and they have to face reality... they have problems that they have to address...

4. What's happening with kids today? It's either they are so violent or suicidal...

5. A society's fascination with guns and alcohol run a muck?

Merger of Passions

On to another personal iBlog 3 story.

Again, if you have been sticking around this blog long enough, I have three general passions (actually, I have four but the last one is unbloggable... I'll give you one guess what that one is...). These are the law, technology and music. As a matter of fact, I'm seriously thinking of buying my own domain name and spinning off all of these passions into their separate blogs. I already did the law part in Semper Fidelis. And I partially serve my technology passion through the Pinoy Tech Blog.

You can lump into law practice (which I still enjoy even after more than 10 years, through there are a lot of pitfalls) my technical writing and the continual practice to perfect that craft through blawging. You can lump the internet (including personal blogging), video games and my gadgets in my technology passion.

But the point of this entry is my passion for music. My 80G ViPod is about half full, 90% music. My choir duties and my chamber group have pushed by flute playing to the next level. And I'm slowly improving in my saxophone playing, as in, I can already play some songs already.

And it's only my music that I have not been really blogging about.

Unknown to many, iBlog 3 was a chance for the merger of my passions for choir and blogging. Mr. Norman Agatep, the Managing Director of Euro RSCG Manila gave a talk to the bloggers about their role in marketing as the emerging prosumer.

But unknown to most of the crowd there (or except to me, I like to think), Mr. Agatep is to Philippine Contemporary Liturgical Music as Yuga is to Philippine blogging. I'd like to call him a choir god like I call Yuga a blog god, but in this context, that's using His name in vain. But this fact was just mentioned in passing when he was introduced to the audience.

If you don't know, Mr. Norman Agatep, along with two other fellows named Jandi Arboleda and Fr. Manoling Francisco, S.J., are responsible for most of the contemporary songs we sing in mass today. These three people are the founders of the Bukas Palad Music Ministry, responsible for songs like Hindi Kita Malilimutan (I Will Never Forget You), Tanging Yaman (My Only Treasure) and Sa 'Yo Lamang (Only Yours), to name a few...

It was through the Bukas Palad Messageboards that my other choir, the BPOCC was formed.

So you don't know what it was like for me to introduce myself to him. Sure, we have communicated in the messageboards and we have some mutual friends but I have not met him in person until iBlog 3. It was like meeting Fr. Mano himself... and they were so similar in demeanor. They're so humble despite their status...

And he was genuinely glad to also meet me in person... and I know we will meet again... because he will attend the BPOCC choir service at the EDSA Shrine one of these days...

I can't wait.

Ten Reasons why MLQ3 should run for the Senate in 2010

This all started from DJB... and the more I think about it... the more "Why not?" clings to my mind...

10. He'll have blogger support. (How many are we, by the way? And how many will we be by 2010?)

9. He'll have the support of the Philippine's most populated city--- his city--- Quezon City.

8. He'll have support from his bailiwicks--- like Quezon Province...

7. A name like that will easily win. Some people would kill to have a name with that much name recall without making an ass of yourself in show business....

6. He does not need a billion pesos to win, hence, he will not be beholden to anybody.

5. The guy evokes respect, wherever he goes. Just seeing him make you want to kiss his ring or something (if he has one... I didn't notice)

4. The guy has his own convictions and advocacies and will not sell himself to the highest bidder.

3. He knows his history and will dare not repeat it...

2. For sure he'll be a better senator than some of those already there. He does excellent research and stock knowledge, unlike others who rely on their staff for every word that comes from his/her mouth...

1. There's a Roxas and an Osmeña there, it's about time for a QUEZON in the Senate.

I know there are more reasons so why not post them here or communicate it to him...

iBlog 3 Post Mortem

Since I had a role in iBlog 2, I never really got the full "participant" treatment there.

It was different in iBlog 3, but I went out yesterday afternoon because of work. Part of that decision was the lack of WiFi yesterday and I was waiting for a client's email.

But today, I went at it "all the way" in a manner of speaking.

Today, I got my lectures from the blogging gods... unlike yesterday which was targeted towards newbies.

These guys now filled my head with thoughts of "Ms. Google Philippines," "the long tail," "niche," "SWOT," "passion," "SEO," "no-blog, no-sex," "social media" and "blog networks."

But it was also a great time to catch up on some friends I have met along my blog-journey. And meet new ones...

Sorry I did not bring a camera this year...

Thanks guys...

Just Came from iBlog 3

It was an ok affair. As the topics for the first day said, this day was for newbies. And my chief complaint is no WiFi so we could not live-blog the event. JJ Disini was blaming it on some computer crash in the University of the Philippines computer registration system that affected internet access. So no one could live-blog the event, except for Noemi Dado microblogging on Twitter.

So Dean Jorge Bocobo and I spent most of the morning talking to each other. And it was so nice to talk to, what I feel like, an old friend. Then I had to go because unlike the pro-bloggers, I have a day job.

Again, congratulations to you, DJB, for winning the Best Socio-Political Blog in the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards, no matter how light you think of it. And see you tomorrow.

To go or not to go?

To iBlog 3? That is the question.

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous lectures
Or to take arms against the sea of WiFi
And by opposing DJB end them? To listen: to sleep;
No more; and by a comment to say we oppose
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That dual core is heir to, 'tis a click rate
Devoutly to be wish'd. To eat, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that adsense revenue what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off Vista,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes fellow bloggers of us all for life.

Given my driving duties yesterday that lasted well into the night, I decided to stay at home for today to catch up on some paperwork. But I guess I have a business/not too business meeting with friends later on tonight, which I have not confirmed yet.

Anyway, are you going to iBlog 3? I'm registered to attend but I noticed the first day's subjects are mostly targeted for newbies. If you want to start a blog, or still new to blogging, I think you better attend.

But since I'm not new to blogging anymore, I'm thinking of either making a short appearance only or skip the first day altogether, as I can spend more time on pending work.

But if I bring Scarlett there, I could do some work, or even liveblog the event (if the event will have free WiFi). In any case, I'm still undecided when it comes to the first day.

Oh, but I'm definitely attending the second day...

So you all have a good day today...

Reader Questions...

If you have been following this blog for some time now, you'll notice I just make a casual reply to comments left in my blog. But this particular entry in my other blog has been flooded by questions/comments. Since the questions there are private in nature I tried to leave these people email answers, unless the question will benefit the general public.

But then, an anonymous person asked a lot of career questions last night. Since he (or she) did not leave a forwarding email address and I guess everyone (particularly new lawyers) will benefit from the answers, I'll post them in this separate entry.

So here goes:

1. Would you recommend working with the PAO?

For those who don't know, PAO stands for the Public Attorney's Office. It's the government agency tasked to represent criminals (or other destitute litigants depending on their criteria) in court.

For a new lawyer who does not have any responsibilities, who wants to crunch about three years of practice in 6 months, the PAO is an excellent place to hone your skills. And it's a perfect career move if you want a career in the judiciary.

The work is sheer murder, though. So I don't recommend it for lawyers with family responsibilities and any similar limitations on work.

2. As for law firms, how will I know if they are in need of associates?

Law firms are always in the lookout for associates. For the big ones, there will never be a shortage of work, hence the need for new guys is constant.

But they only accept associates from three schools, unless they are desperate.

And there's nothing wrong in applying anywhere. There's nothing to loose but maybe everything to gain, as the saying goes.

3. How do I send in my resume? Should it be by personal service, mail or email?

Tradition says you should personally deliver you resume. But for me, this only works for small firms. For the big firms, you only get to meet their receiving clerk so there's really no point in wasting precious time delivering your resume personally.

For the small firms, personal delivery may pay off because you may get an instant interview if you meet a partner (or any boss) while you are there.

As for email, I guess you can send your resume through the partner's personal email. The firm's email passes through the same receiving clerk. If you can get the boss' personal email that would show resourcefulness and may get you an interview for it.

(Actually, I won't even bother to send my resume to these big firms, if I were you. If they did not invite you to apply when you were just taking the bar, they won't bother with you when you already passed. They already did their recruiting way before the graduating batch took the bar exams.)

4. Do I have to submit my transcript together with the resume? What other documents do I have to submit together with the resume?

Normally, the standard resume will do but it wouldn't hurt to include your transcript (especially if you can be proud of that transcript).

But make sure you have a good resume. And I don't mean this only as regards its contents (because there's really no remedy for this at this point in time). I mean, just make sure there are not typos, capitalization or gramatical errors in it because you know where that piece of paper will go.

Personally, if I'm hiring (but I'm not so don't bother), I'm looking for two things: writing ability and/or resourcefulness. I don't have the time to spoonfeed or hold a newbie's hand as he/she first experiences the rigors of practice. I'm looking for a lawyer who already knows how to swim when I throw them off the deep end of the pool. I'm going to look for a new guy requiring minimal supervision (be it in writing, litigating, or both). If I can find an associate possessing both of these traits, then I found a gem. And mind you, a bar topnotcher does not necessarily possess any or all of these qualities.

5. What questions are usually asked in interviews? Does the interview go like a revalida where anything and everything under a particular subject could be asked? Are there hypothetical questions given? Will it be by a panel?

To these questions, just try to approach it from the other point of view. What is the point of an interview (or any interview)?

It's simply to try to get to know you given a limited time. So everything, every question, will supposedly lead to this purpose. So I guess you have to be prepared for everything, from family background to writing style, even to sleeping preferences (as even this has a bearing on your potential job performance).

Panels are rare as lawyers have limited time for small and medium scale firms.

Usually, in big firms, you start with a one person interview and end up with a panel (as the partners, assuming they're equal, would want a say in who to hire).

If you are applying as a lawyer in a corporation (or in government), the standard job hunting tips apply.

So there. I hope this helps.

And thank you, whoever you are for giving me something to write about today.

No Sympathy, No Prayers

So you're going through a very risky operation?

Pardon me (or more accurately, your wife pardon me), but you'll get no sympathy, no prayers from me. This is one of the last remaining rights I have in this country and I'm exercising it: the right to withhold such from you.

As a matter of fact, I'm exercising the only other right I have to say "Serves you right!" or "You deserve everything that's coming to you."

And believe me, I'm not alone in this sentiment.

Just Relaxing

I was really busy the past week, as you may have known, and today was the only time I really took a vacation. And since my trip to the north was cancelled, this day was the only day I got some rest.

So saying that I spent a lot of this day unconscious is pretty obvious...

And tomorrow will be the start of another busy week, despite that cancellation.

And I hope you have a very productive week.

Of course, it went well

Almost had some hiccups, like the guests were late and a lot of no-shows. But I couldn't blame them because it was still long vacation time...

But we all had fun, anyway!

Dearest Bea,

Just a short, quick message for this year.

I can only wish for you good health and healing. I know we've been through a lot through the years. And someday, you'll understand what happened and forgive us for it.

And more than the support I have provided, I can only offer you my love on this, your ninth birthday.

Happy Birthday, my baby. You'll always be my baby.

Nico and I love you very much.

Forgive Me for I Have Sinned...

I have been spending some of my Holy Week time playing Desktop Tower Defense instead of praying and reflecting. Spent a lot of time yesterday in Church, though, because of choir...

Have a blessed and reflective Holy Week. I hope you don't get addicted to this simply fantastic game.

Good Friday Gospel Reading

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to John (Jn 18:1 - 19:42)

Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley
to where there was a garden,
into which he and his disciples entered.
Judas his betrayer also knew the place,
because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards
from the chief priests and the Pharisees
and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him,
went out and said to them, “Whom are you looking for?”
They answered him, “Jesus the Nazorean.”
He said to them, “I AM.”
Judas his betrayer was also with them.
When he said to them, “I AM, “
they turned away and fell to the ground.
So he again asked them,
“Whom are you looking for?”
They said, “Jesus the Nazorean.”
Jesus answered,
“I told you that I AM.
So if you are looking for me, let these men go.”
This was to fulfill what he had said,
“I have not lost any of those you gave me.”
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it,
struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear.
The slave’s name was Malchus.
Jesus said to Peter,
“Put your sword into its scabbard.
Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me?”

So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus,
bound him, and brought him to Annas first.
He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,
who was high priest that year.
It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews
that it was better that one man should die rather than the people.

Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus.
Now the other disciple was known to the high priest,
and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus.
But Peter stood at the gate outside.
So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest,

went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter in.
Then the maid who was the gatekeeper said to Peter,
“You are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?”
He said, “I am not.”
Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire
that they had made, because it was cold,
and were warming themselves.
Peter was also standing there keeping warm.

The high priest questioned Jesus
about his disciples and about his doctrine.
Jesus answered him,
“I have spoken publicly to the world.
I have always taught in a synagogue
or in the temple area where all the Jews gather,
and in secret I have said nothing. Why ask me?
Ask those who heard me what I said to them.
They know what I said.”
When he had said this,
one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said,
“Is this the way you answer the high priest?”
Jesus answered him,
“If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong;
but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?”
Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm.
And they said to him,
“You are not one of his disciples, are you?”
He denied it and said,
“I am not.”
One of the slaves of the high priest,
a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said,
“Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
Again Peter denied it.
And immediately the cock crowed.

Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium.
It was morning.
And they themselves did not enter the praetorium,
in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passover.
So Pilate came out to them and said,
“What charge do you bring against this man?”
They answered and said to him,
“If he were not a criminal,
we would not have handed him over to you.”
At this, Pilate said to them,
“Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.”
The Jews answered him,
“We do not have the right to execute anyone, “

in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled
that he said indicating the kind of death he would die.
So Pilate went back into the praetorium
and summoned Jesus and said to him,
“Are you the King of the Jews?”
Jesus answered,
“Do you say this on your own
or have others told you about me?”
Pilate answered,
“I am not a Jew, am I?
Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me.
What have you done?”
Jesus answered,
“My kingdom does not belong to this world.
If my kingdom did belong to this world,
my attendants would be fighting
to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.
But as it is, my kingdom is not here.”
So Pilate said to him,
“Then you are a king?”
Jesus answered,
“You say I am a king.
For this I was born and for this I came into the world,
to testify to the truth.
Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

When he had said this,
he again went out to the Jews and said to them,
“I find no guilt in him.
But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover.
Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
They cried out again,
“Not this one but Barabbas!”
Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.
And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head,
and clothed him in a purple cloak,
and they came to him and said,
“Hail, King of the Jews!”
And they struck him repeatedly.
Once more Pilate went out and said to them,
“Look, I am bringing him out to you,
so that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”
So Jesus came out,
wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak.
And he said to them, “Behold, the man!”
When the chief priests and the guards saw him they cried out,
“Crucify him, crucify him!”

Pilate said to them,
“Take him yourselves and crucify him.
I find no guilt in him.”
The Jews answered,
“We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die,
because he made himself the Son of God.”
Now when Pilate heard this statement,
he became even more afraid,
and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus,
“Where are you from?”
Jesus did not answer him.
So Pilate said to him,
“Do you not speak to me?
Do you not know that I have power to release you
and I have power to crucify you?”
Jesus answered him,
“You would have no power over me
if it had not been given to you from above.
For this reason the one who handed me over to you
has the greater sin.”
Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but the Jews cried out,
“If you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar.
Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”

When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus out
and seated him on the judge’s bench
in the place called Stone Pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
It was preparation day for Passover, and it was about noon.
And he said to the Jews,
“Behold, your king!”
They cried out,
“Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!”
Pilate said to them,
“Shall I crucify your king?”
The chief priests answered,
“We have no king but Caesar.”
Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.

So they took Jesus, and, carrying the cross himself,
he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull,
in Hebrew, Golgotha.
There they crucified him, and with him two others,
one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross.
It read,
“Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews.”
Now many of the Jews read this inscription,
because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city;
and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,

“Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’
but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews’.”
Pilate answered,
“What I have written, I have written.”

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus,
they took his clothes and divided them into four shares,
a share for each soldier.
They also took his tunic, but the tunic was seamless,
woven in one piece from the top down.
So they said to one another,
“Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be, “
in order that the passage of Scripture might be fulfilled that says:
They divided my garments among them,
and for my vesture they cast lots.
This is what the soldiers did.
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary of Magdala.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
“Behold, your mother.”
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

After this, aware that everything was now finished,
in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
Jesus said, “I thirst.”
There was a vessel filled with common wine.
So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop
and put it up to his mouth.
When Jesus had taken the wine, he said,
“It is finished.”
And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.

Here all kneel and pause for a short time.

Now since it was preparation day,
in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath,
for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one,
the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken
and that they be taken down.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first
and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs,
but one soldier thrust his lance into his side,
and immediately blood and water flowed out.
An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true;
he knows that he is speaking the truth,
so that you also may come to believe.
For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled:
Not a bone of it will be broken.
And again another passage says:
They will look upon him whom they have pierced.

After this, Joseph of Arimathea,
secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews,
asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus.
And Pilate permitted it.
So he came and took his body.
Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night,
also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes
weighing about one hundred pounds.
They took the body of Jesus
and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices,
according to the Jewish burial custom.
Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden,
and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.
So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day;
for the tomb was close by.

Maundy Thursday Gospel Reading

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to John (Jn 13: 1-15)

Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come
to pass from this world to the Father.
He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.
The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over.
So, during supper,
fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power
and that he had come from God and was returning to God,
he rose from supper and took off his outer garments.
He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
Then he poured water into a basin
and began to wash the disciples’ feet
and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,
“Master, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“What I am doing, you do not understand now,
but you will understand later.”
Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered him,
“Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.”
Simon Peter said to him,
“Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well.”
Jesus said to him,
“Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed,
for he is clean all over;
so you are clean, but not all.”
For he knew who would betray him;
for this reason, he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

So when he had washed their feet
and put his garments back on and reclined at table again,
he said to them, “Do you realize what I have done for you?
You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am.
If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet,
you ought to wash one another’s feet.
I have given you a model to follow,
so that as I have done for you, you should also do.”

Holy Wednesday Gospel Reading

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Matthew (Mt 26:14-25)

Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?"

He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The teacher says, "My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples."'"

The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover.

When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve.

And while they were eating, he said, "Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."

Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, "Surely it is not I, Lord?"

He said in reply, "He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born."

Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" He answered, "You have said so."

Side Prayers

PRAYER FOR GENEROSITY
Lord Jesus,
Teach me to be generous,
Teach me to serve You as You deserve
To give and not to count the cost,
To fight and not to heed the wounds,
To toil and not to seek for rest,
To labor and not to ask for reward,
except that of knowing
That I do Your Holy Will. Amen

THE LAWYER'S PRAYER
May every word I speak be from Your Truth...
I ask come from Your Wisdom...
May every case I handle receive Your Guidance...
May every heart, every life I touch, feel Your Love.

THE JABEZ PRAYER
And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying,
"Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your Hand be with me,
that You would keep me from evil,
that I may not cause pain."

So God granted him what he requested.

Side Oath

I will not wittingly or willingly
promote or sue any groundless,
false or unlawful suit,
nor give aid nor consent to the same;
I will delay no man for money or malice,
and will conduct myself as a lawyer
according to the best of my knowledge
and discretion with all good fidelity
as well to the courts as to my clients;
and I impose upon myself this voluntary obligation
without any mental reservation
or purpose of evasion.
So help me God.
