April Fool's Charity
This draws parallels with the rich Hollywood celebrities adopting children from Third World countries, building schools in their roots and promoting or making huge donations to charities.
Commendable gestures, of course. But it's so easy to be charitable when you have more than enough, though. And these people already had their rewards here, in terms of the acclaim and media mileage they already earned.
Try being charitable when you don't have anything to give anymore. That's the true test.
With this, the following story comes to mind:
- [Jesus] sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums
- A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.
- Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury.
- For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." (Mark 12: 41-44)
- A Holy Week reflection for everyone...
